Connect MetaTrader 4 (live sync)

Automatic sync comes with Regular (2 accounts, every 30 minutes) and Pro (up to 5 accounts, every minute, plus Sync now). On Starter you can still bring trades in with a file — see Import files.

SniperJournal Sync is a small Expert Advisor (EA) that runs inside your own MT4 terminal. It reads every trade you have closed on that account and sends it to your journal, then sends each new trade a few seconds after you close it, while the terminal is open. It never places or changes a trade, and your broker password never leaves your computer.

Takes about five minutes. Works with any broker, live or demo.

Don't want to install anything? Pick Connect with your login · nothing to install instead — same panel, no download, no All History step, and it keeps syncing while your PC is off. Steps on Quick connect MetaTrader. The add-on below is the choice when you'd rather your broker password never leaves your computer.

1. Get your sync key

  1. In SniperJournal open Accounts (/app/accounts) and click Connect MetaTrader, then Sync add-on (runs in your terminal).
  2. Your sync key is shown at the top. Click Copy.
  3. Treat it like a password — anyone with the key can push trades into your journal. If it ever leaks, click Regenerate and paste the new key into the EA.

2. Download the add-on

On the same page, download SniperJournalSync.mq4 (the .mq4 file, not the .mq5).

3. Put it in MetaTrader

  1. In MT4: File → Open Data Folder.
  2. Open the MQL4 folder, then Experts, and drop SniperJournalSync.mq4 in there.
  3. Back in MT4, in the Navigator panel (Ctrl+N) right-click Expert Advisors → Refresh. SniperJournalSync appears in the list.

On a Mac? MT4 on a Mac is the Windows terminal in a wrapper your broker packaged (PlayOnMac / Wine). File → Open Data Folder still works and is the only reliable way to find the folder — drop the file into MQL4/Experts there, then Refresh in Navigator as above. If the wrapper misbehaves, Quick connect skips the install entirely.

Only on your phone? The MT4 phone app can't run add-ons or export statements. Use Quick connect — login, investor password and server typed on the Accounts page, synced from the cloud. Works from the phone.

4. Allow the connection (the step most people miss)

  1. Tools → Options → Expert Advisors.
  2. Tick Allow automated trading.
  3. Tick Allow WebRequest for listed URL.
  4. In the box underneath, add exactly: `` https://journal.marksfxacademy.com ` Just the site address — no /api/...` on the end, no trailing slash.
  5. Click OK.

Without this step the EA runs but can't talk to SniperJournal. You'll see a SniperJournal: add https://journal.marksfxacademy.com to Tools > Options… line (MT4 error code 4060) in the Experts tab.

5. Show your full history (MT4 only)

MT4 only lets an EA see the history that is loaded in the terminal, and by default that is just the last few days.

  1. Open the Terminal panel (Ctrl+T) → Account History tab.
  2. Right-click anywhere in the list → All History.

Do this before attaching the EA, otherwise only your recent trades come in.

6. Attach it to a chart and paste your key

  1. Drag SniperJournalSync from Navigator onto any chart (which chart doesn't matter).
  2. In the window that opens go to the Inputs tab.
  3. Paste your sync key into ApiKey. Leave ApiUrl as it is.
  4. Click OK.
  5. Make sure the AutoTrading button in the toolbar is green/on. A smiley face appears in the chart's top-right corner when the EA is live.

7. Check it worked

In the Terminal panel open the Experts tab. Within about 20 seconds you should see:

SniperJournal Sync started. First push in about 20 seconds...
SniperJournal: pushed 143 closed trades (143 new).

Refresh Accounts in SniperJournal — your account is now in the list with status ok and a last-sync time. From here on each trade you close shows up in your journal within seconds (an open journal tab updates by itself).

Keeping it synced

The EA only runs while MT4 is open. Close the terminal and syncing pauses; open it again and the EA catches up on everything you closed in between — nothing is lost. If you want trades to arrive while your PC is off, run MT4 on a VPS (most brokers offer one).

Set it up before November 2026? Your copy sends trades every 15 minutes. Download SniperJournalSync.mq4 again (step 2), drop it into MQL4/Experts and replace the old file. In Navigator right-click SniperJournalSync → Modify, press Compile (F7) in MetaEditor and close it. The EA on your chart reloads by itself with your key still in place, and the Experts tab shows "SniperJournal Sync 1.10 started". From then on trades arrive within seconds.

Something not working?

See Troubleshooting — the MetaTrader section covers the Allow WebRequest error (4060 on MT4), "Unknown sync key", server replied 400 / 500 lines, missing old trades and accounts that show as stale.
